"I hope to dedicate my future OT career to advocating for underrepresented populations and promoting occupational justice. I hope to influence lives by helping others achieve a better quality of life, while giving back to my community."
Sakari King, Occupational Therapy, 2023

The following is an interview from when Sakari was a student in the College of Health Sciences at ³ûÄñÊÓƵ.

Undergraduate degree: Biola University, Bachelor of Arts, Psychology

Hometown: Los Angeles, California

What inspired you to pursue a healthcare career?

An occupational therapist came to my school during my undergraduate studies to talk about her career, and I was inspired by the amazing work and stories that she shared. It was at that moment that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare.

How did your background and history factor into your career choice?

I am the first generation in my family to attend graduate school.  My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer for half of my childhood, and I had to care for a sick parent at the age of 16. After I graduated from my undergrad program, my mother’s cancer became terminal, and she was put in hospice. My mother took pride in her independence, and I had to watch that independence diminish. It was challenging to watch my mother in such a care-dependent state. The experience significantly impacted my life, yet it fueled my heart to pursue a degree in occupational therapy to help others prolong their independence as long as possible.

Why did you decide to attend ³ûÄñÊÓƵ?

I decided to choose ³ûÄñÊÓƵ because they highly emphasize their students’ dedication and potential. The University looks beyond the individual’s academics and focuses on their capability and determination, while helping students to reach their goals in their healthcare career.

What about a ³ûÄñÊÓƵ education do you want to carry forward in your career?

I hope to dedicate my future OT career to advocating for underrepresented populations and promoting occupational justice. I hope to influence lives by helping others achieve a better quality of life, while giving back to my community.
