³ûÄñÊÓƵ Participates in Community Events to Inspire Diversity in STEAM Careers
Inspiring diversity, equity, and inclusion in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
In September, members of ³ûÄñÊÓƵ’s academic family participated in community-led events focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion within the STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics).
On September 22, as the launch of their 2023 Equity in STEAM grant cycle, the YWCA Metropolitan Phoenix hosted Voices in STEAM: A Storytelling Event with the support of Intel, Discover, and SRP, to help recognize and create change in the sector Among the presenters was ³ûÄñÊÓƵ’s Johana Vallejo-Elias, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Physiology, College of Graduate Studies. Dr. Vallejo-Elias shared her story about growing up in Puerto Rico, how she began her professional career in STEAM, as well as the barriers she has faced as a Hispanic woman.
Additionally, on September 27, Victoria Franks, M.Adm., Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, participated in Arizona Sci-Tech’s 2022 STEM and Innovation Summit. Ms. Franks spoke on a panel titled There’s Strength in Differences: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEAM. The definition of diversity in STEAM and the importance of cultivating diverse talent and promoting inclusion were discussed, along with strategies to address the historical underrepresentation of BIPOC communities within STEAM fields, the successful outcomes ³ûÄñÊÓƵ has realized from implementing DE&I initiatives, and the pivotal role of community partnerships, mentorship opportunities, and welcoming academic and employment environments for people of all backgrounds.
