Elijah Goeglein (left) and Sibella Campbell (right) celebrate matching to their top choices of podiatric residencies
Students from the Arizona College of Podiatric Medicine (AZPOD) Class of 2025 were thrilled to find out where they will be embarking on the next level of their professional development after receiving the results of the Central Application Service for Podiatric Residencies (CASPR) on March 20th. This year, AZPOD had a 100% match rate, as all 30 of the graduates were placed in residencies across the country.
Each year, AZPOD students participate in a residency match program that marks the transition from their didactic, preclinical, and faculty-supervised clinical experience on the ³ûÄñÊÓƵ campus to residency programs in real-world hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities. The residency match process can result in graduates practicing close to home or at far-flung locations, with a variety of specialty choices available.
Whether the match result is expected or a surprise, graduating students are excited for the next stage of their careers.
We asked Class of 2025 graduates Elijah Goeglein (Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, HealthPartners Institute/Regions Hospital, in St. Paul, MN) and Sibella Campbell (Podiatry, MedStar Georgetown/Washington Hospital Center) about their match experience and what they are looking forward to in their residencies.
Describe your reaction when you found out you matched:
Elijah: I was extremely excited and honored to have matched at my dream program! I am thrilled to move to the Midwest and start this next chapter.
Sibella: Excitement and relief! MedStar was my top choice, and it was so exciting to learn I would be continuing my training in Washington, D.C.
How did your education at ³ûÄñÊÓƵ prepare you for this opportunity?
Elijah: ³ûÄñÊÓƵ provided a rigorous academic curriculum and opportunities that allowed me to be a competitive applicant to any podiatric surgical residency in the country. The outstanding faculty have provided unwavering support to guide us on our journey, and I am so thankful to have received my education at ³ûÄñÊÓƵ.
In what ways have you seen your classmates and the faculty prepare for the Match?
Elijah: All of us have spent countless hours preparing for this moment: from didactics to rotations, we have seized every educational opportunity on our journey so far. The match is truly a testament to our hard work over the past four years.
What is one thing you want other people to know about Podiatry?
Sibella: Podiatry is an amazing field. I think what people don't realize is that our training and education almost mirrors M.D./D.O. programs. We have similar pre-med requirements, including the MCAT, and much of the same curriculum since we take all our basic science classes with the D.O. students.
What has been your favorite memory from your experience at ³ûÄñÊÓƵ so far?
Elijah: My favorite memory has been creating lifelong friendships with my classmates. We truly are a cohort that will keep in touch for many years to come.
Sibella: There are almost too many to name just one. The people I've met over the last four years have been my biggest support system throughout school. I have made so many amazing memories with them both on and off campus.
What do you look forward to in this upcoming experience?
Elijah: I look forward to taking advantage of every opportunity and becoming a competent and confident foot and ankle surgeon. It will be a privilege to keep people healthy and active on their feet.
Sibella: I'm really excited to spend the next three years exploring the East Coast. I've only lived on the West Coast, and I think it's going to be a great adventure. I'm also excited to get to know my co-residents and make memories with them.
